Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). GOTS is recognised as the most important standard for sustainable production of garments and textile products made of natural fibres from organic farming such as organic cotton or organic wool. It is possible to certify under GOTS: Textile products; Textile chemicals for the textile industry. Manufacturing Activities
What it is certified
The Global Organic Textile Standard has been developed by leading international organisations in organic farming in order to ensure that the consumer is provided with organic textile products obtained in compliance with strict environmental and social criteria applied at all levels of the production, from the harvesting of natural fibres to the subsequent manufacturing phases, up to labelling of the finished product. GOTS, responding to the strong demand for common production criteria from the industry and the distribution of textile and clothing products, has received wide international acknowledgement which allows those who produce and sell organic textile products to have a certification accepted in all major markets. According to GOTS it is possible to certify:
- textile products
- manufacturing activities
- chemical products for textile industry.
Products containing at least 70% natural fibres from organic farming, such as but not limited to: fibres, yarns, fabrics, clothing, textile accessories (worn or not worn), toys, textiles, household linen, mattresses and bedding, as well as personal care products.
The standard requires that all manufacturing processes such as, for example, dyeing or third party printing, are certified by operators who adopt management models and procedures in compliance with GOTS requirements.
Approval of dyes and auxiliaries for the textile industry according to GOTS
ICEA is accredited to verify the approval of chemicals that can be used in the textile ennobling of GOTS certified textile products. The assessment of a chemical product is mainly based on the verification of toxicological and eco- toxicological characteristics.
How to certify
The certification process is divided into three main phases:
- Initial assessment of the products and production, which includes, among other things, the assessment of the composition of the products for which certification is required, as well as the conformity and natural origin of raw materials and suppliers and the suitability of chemicals used in specific manufacturing processes.
- On-site inspection, to verify: the effective compliance of products with GOTS criteria; the correct organisation and management of manufacturing processes and internal procedures that could compromise the conformity of the product itself; the compliance of the products with the requirements defined in the standard; the compliance with relevant environmental and social criteria.
- Issue of the Certificate of Conformity based on the information and data collected as part of the assessment and verification process.
