The outcome? 69% of the 167 assessed criteria were found to be fully aligned with the OECD Guidelines, with GOTS covering all six steps of the due diligence process\u2014from establishing responsible business conduct to preventing, mitigating, and remediating negative impacts on human rights and the environment.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The recognition by the OECD confirms that GOTS is not just a certification, but a strategic tool to support companies in building responsible business practices throughout the entire supply chain,&#8221;<\/em> commented Global Standard, the organisation that develops and manages GOTS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key strengths highlighted by the OECD:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive thematic coverage:<\/strong> GOTS addresses environmental, integrity, and human rights risks with a consistent and integrated approach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Whole supply chain involvement:<\/strong> The requirements apply not only to the company\u2019s own operations but to the entire supply chain.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong preventive and participatory approach:<\/strong> Concrete commitments to responsible purchasing practices and worker involvement are required.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency and accountability:<\/strong> Certified companies must publicly report on due diligence actions, identified significant risks, and progress made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Opportunities for improvement noted:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OECD report also identified areas for further improvement, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Greater clarity and consistency across key documents (Standard, Implementation Manual, and Manual for Certification Bodies), to ensure uniform understanding among auditors and businesses.<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening internal grievance mechanisms and increasing attention to the impacts of purchasing practices, which are still only partially addressed.<\/li>\n<li>Better definition of stakeholder engagement and the traceability of impacts over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A recognition that reinforces trust among businesses and consumers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, over 15,400 facilities in 87 countries are certified according to GOTS, which requires that textile products contain at least 70% certified organic or in-conversion natural fibres. Certification is based on independent third-party annual audits, with the possibility of unannounced inspections.<\/p>\n<p>The OECD report is part of a broader project aimed at evaluating how well leading sustainability initiatives align with the recommendations outlined in the OECD Due Diligence Guidance.
