The event, titled “Organic and Regenerative: Together Towards the Future and Beyond?”, served as the first global platform to explore and discuss the synergies between organic and regenerative agriculture. The Pre-conference concluded with the drafting of a shared declaration on the general principles of organic and regenerative agriculture, which was subsequently submitted to the IFOAM General Assembly.

The approved declaration highlights how the organic movement welcomes the focus on regenerative principles and practices, which are deeply rooted in organic agriculture. Actors seriously committed to regenerative practices are seen as natural allies, capable of driving continuous improvement in organic practices. This ensures that organic standards, certifications, practices, and policies remain the best reference for regenerative approaches and outcomes. ICEA aligns with the organic movement’s commitment to promoting the adoption of sustainable practices, protecting nature, the climate, social justice, and food health. The declaration calls for clear action to ensure healthy food from healthy soils.

However, there is significant concern about the misleading use of the term “regenerative” by some companies, who use it in marketing operations to mask harmful agricultural practices, such as the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. ICEA joins in denouncing “regenerative greenwashing”, contributing to combating such practices and promoting policies and knowledge that support the transition towards truly sustainable agricultural systems at the local and community levels. Together, the organic, agroecological, and serious regenerative movements represent a powerful alternative to traditional and degenerative agricultural systems.

ICEA will continue to contribute to this change, working towards a more sustainable and regenerative agricultural future.

The full statement is available at: https://www.ifoam.bio/news/elevating-truly-regenerative-agriculture

[/spb_text_block]

[spb_text_block pb_margin_bottom=”no” pb_border_bottom=”no” width=”1/1″ el_position=”first last”] On 6th December, 2024, the General Assembly of IFOAM Organics International overwhelmingly approved the declaration “Elevating Truly Regenerative Agriculture – Statement from the Organic Movement.” This pivotal document provides valuable insights into current regenerative initiatives for members, partners, and stakeholders in regenerative agriculture, representing a fundamental starting point for dialogue on agricultural transformation pathways.
