COR Organic Certification (Canada)

COR Organic Certification (Canada)

Canada Organic Regime (COR) certifies organic food products for the Canadian market and allows both export and marketing.

Operators have two options for exporting organic food products to Canada:

  1. Export products on the basis of EC Certification No. 834/07
Since July 2011, thanks to the equivalence agreement between Regulation (EC) No. 834/07 and COR Regulation, products certified under Regulation (EC) No.834/07 can be exported to Canada without any further certification. The logo of the COR 2 Regulation may be inserted on the label. Ask for COR certification (Canada Organic Regime).
ICEA has been accredited by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for its control and certification activities in compliance with the Canada Organic Regime (COR) standard, which regulates the production, labelling and marketing of food products from organic farming in Canada, which came into force on 30 June 2009.
    The COR Regulation:
    · apply to foodstuffs for human and animal use
    · do not require certification of hydroponic and aeroponic crops (also covered by the EU standard)
    · provides for specific requirements throughout all stages of the production chain whereby all operators producing, processing and labelling organic products for export to Canada must be certified in accordance with the COR. The update of the agreement between Canada and the EU entered into force on 7 April 2016.
The Government of Canada and the European Commission are pleased to announce the extension of the EU-Canada equivalence agreement for organic farming, which enters into force today. Five years after the implementation of the EU-Canada equivalence agreement (EUCOEA), an agreement was reached to extend the scope of products that can be marketed under mutual recognition. Organic wine was not included in the scope of the EUCOEA Agreement. The update will allow organic wine certified under the European or Canadian regulations to be sold and labelled as organic in both markets.”
The update of the EU-Canada equivalence agreement allows agricultural products, including wine, which are produced and processed in the European Union and which are certified under Regulation No. 834/07 to be sold and labelled as organic in Canada, including the use of the Canadian and European logo.

How to certify

The certification process is divided into five main phases:

  1. Request for inspections and certification service and submission of the required documentation to start the certification process.
  2. Initial assessment of products and production process. The company shall describe all working procedures and production techniques used. The laboratories and food industries, in addition to the documentation already sent for the issue of organic certification Regulation (EC) No. 834/07 (recipes, supplier list, and management plan) shall also submit an addendum to the Management Plan in order to describe the measures taken to comply with the specific COR requirements. The same applies to farms supplying the raw material.
  3. On-site inspection of all operators in the production chain, to verify adequate compliance with the COR rules, in particular as regards the parameters that are more restrictive than EU rules.
  4. Issue of the Certificate of Conformity the basis of information and data collected as part of the assessment and verification process. The certificate contains a list of products certified and meeting the requirements of the COR.
  5. Annual surveillance through regular inspections and analyses to confirm the maintenance of compliance conditions.
