FCS Forests

Forestry certification stems from the growing need for consumers to have wood-based products from properly managed and sustainable forests available on international markets, both from an ecological, economic and social point of view. ICEA operates as an inspection body on behalf of Soil Association Certification Ltd, an internationally accredited certification body for the certification of forests or forest plantations, and products of forest origin or wood products in compliance with strict standards promoted by ICEA: The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® N002714) Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™)

FSC is an international non-governmental, independent and non-profit organisation established in 993 to promote responsible management of forests and plantations. FSC Trademark® identifies products containing wood from responsibly and adequately managed forests according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. The forest of origin has been independently controlled and assessed in compliance with such standards (principles and criteria of proper forest management) established and approved by Trademarks FSC® Forest Stewardship Council. FSC® provides three types of certification:

  1. Forest Management Certification (FM) – issued to forest managers and owners whose management practices meet the requirements of the FSC Principles and Criteria.
  2. Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification – guarantees FSC certified material and products from all along the supply chain, from the forest to the shop.
  3. Controlled wood  – to allow companies to avoid those types of wood considered “not acceptable”.

Complaints and appeals

To guarantee a continuous improvement of the certification process Soil Association and ICEA ensure the stakeholders to manage all appeals and complaints that may arise according to IP-GEN-004-10 procedure (insert downloadable document) timely and impartially.

Further information on FSC

The Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) is an international initiative based on a broad consensus among stakeholders involved in the implementation of sustainable forest management at national and regional level. Representatives of forest and poplar plantations, final consumers, users, professionals, the wood industry, and craft people support the development of the PEFC. The certifications provided by PEFC are:

  • Certification of Sustainable Forest Management (SFS) – guarantees to the final consumer that products of forest origin derive from legally managed and sustainable forests and they do not come from illegal logging or irresponsible interventions, which can lead to the impoverishment or destruction of forest resources.
  • Chain-of-Custody (CoC) Certification – ensures that the company owns and uses the necessary security mechanisms to track certified products within the company’s manufacturing process.
